How to Overclock Your System

on November 4th, 2008 by W. J. Rice

overclockI haven’t ventured into overclocking but I know it can be a major element in a high end system. For those who don’t know - It’s pushing particular components (e.g. CPU, Mobo, RAM, Video Card) to their max in order to:

  1. Get the very last ounce of power in a dying rig and hope you don’t burn it out (see warnings)
  2. Exceed all your friends measly systems and earn bragging rights

Here are some warnings:

  • You’ll be increasing the voltage, so you run the risk of permanently damaging the component (or components) and system.
  • The heat emanating from the component will increase and there’s a probable chance you’ll need to go out and a purchase a more advanced cooling system. For example a copper heat sink or a liquid cooling system.
  • Can also lead to system instability.

There’s a lot to consider when you overclock. It’s not for the faint of heart, there are some serious overclockers out there who have the experience…consult one, just remember to thank Albert Arnold Gore, Jr. for inventing the Interwebs.

Eventually I’ll overclock my system and I’ll use these resources to get me started. I strongly urge you to research beyond these links.
