My Top 10 Favorite FPS’ for the PC (Pre-2005)
Before I start playing high end first person shooters like Far Cry 2, Crysis, and BioShock - therefore ruining any chance of past FPS games making it on a top 10 list - I thought I’d take a moment to remember the old days.
Top 10…
Keep in mind, up until about 2004, 95% of my game time was spent on consoles and I only occasionally played PC games.
10. Wolfenstein 3D
The first FPS game I played. It was the FPS that popped the proverbial cherry. It’s so damn old, modern computers can now play in flash. Damn it’s old, but it’s still fun to shoot Nazis. They say nein…
9. Heretic I
Riding on the coat tails of the ultra successful Doom series, Heretic was born from the womb of Raven Software. I enjoyed trading in my guns and bullets for magical weapons and mana.
8. Hexen Series
Built to defeat Quake, it’s quite an entertaining game. It actually takes place in the same universe as Heretic, but another realm. I wish they’d bring these types of fantasy-type FPS games back. I suppose Bio Shock is somewhat in the same vein, but it’s more sci-fi than fantasy.
7. Doom 3
The re-imagination of the Doom series and one of the first high end games I had played. My computer couldn’t handle it (still can’t)…I could go all day on why I need a new computer. Doom 3’s atmosphere is excellent and spine chilling. A very enjoyable game, can’t wait for Doom 4.
6. Doom
If Wolfenstein popped the cherry for FPS games, than Doom blew open the mainstream gates and made it profitable. ID Software brought a powerfully addictive game to the table. One marine against hordes of demons from some kind of hell we had never seen.
5. Unreal Tournament 2004
A very well crafted FPS and truly one of the greatest franchises. The death matches and the online play are great experiences. I can’t wait to play UT3, it’ll dethrone UT2004. It’s almost serving as a place holder.
4. Duke Nukem 3D
If you had any sort of sense of humor, you had to like Duke Nukem 3D. This was the first Duke Nukem in three dimensions, so it was the third in the series and the first next-gen version. What in the hell happened to the now infamous Duke Nukem Forever? Most of you may know of it as the most delayed title in video game history…no, I’m not kidding.
3. Quake series
Essentially the first FPS game to be playable on the newly commercialized Interwebs. One of the first true successors to the FPS throne after Doom. It was groundbreaking and enjoyable.
2. Serious Sam series
That’s right, Serious Sam…can you believe it? It’s so damn comical and it has what I truly want from FPS games…lots and lots…and lots….and lots….of targets. I mean there were levels with wall to wall enemies! I love it, I might have to reinstall it as we speak!
1. Doom 2 (specifically Final Doom)
Doom 2 takes everything in Doom 1 and does what any great sequel does…unleash hordes of demons upon your helpless ass. It’s number 1 because I have fond memories of playing it on my parents computer as a young’n. Oh the younger years…
—-x—–
I can sense a level of depression descending upon some readers. I rated these games on fun and how I remember them, so some of these titles I haven’t played since 1995.
All of these games are pre-2005 (I have never played Half Life, which makes me a horrible person in most FPS fans minds).
Sorry…
What’s your favorite pre-2005 FPS games?
