Top 10 PC Games We All Should Play At Least Once

on December 1st, 2008 by W. J. Rice

Theoritical Installment of Diablo

I have been out of the PC gaming for 3 or 4 years now. Once I build my new system, I hope to play some of these critically acclaimed games.

Check Em out…

Diablo III
Before there was World of Warcraft, there was Diablo. One of my favorite games of all time and apparently 18.5 million others. Diablo I and II were beautifully designed and highly addictive. I love the hack and slash mixed with traditional role playing game features. With that said, I’m expecting Diablo III to be the magnum opus, the pinnacle, the definitive…..Expectations are high and my hopes are up. Let’s hope this doesn’t turn out like the Star Wars Prequel trilogy or Wu-Tang Clan’s 8 Diagrams (They’re both good, but not game changing).

More Info:

Grand Theft Auto IV
Bring on the violence, mayhem, and anarchy. Violence in games? The GTA series has it all in spades and spades. The best thing about GTA is the completely open environment. I have never played GTA I and II and really don’t care, but Grand Theft Auto III was a powerful re-definition of the series. San Andreas pushed it into the stratosphere, and from what I hear: GTA IV just went higher.

Fallout 3
I have never played Fallout 1 & 2, but the third installment looks impressive. Once again, the mix of RPG elements with alternative methods, in this case it’s a FPS, pushes this game over the line. The ability to stop time and pick your precise attack points is not unique (see Red Steel), but it’s done far better in this game. And it’s open-ended (see GTA and Far Cry 2). I love games where you can choose to be evil, good, or just ride the middle. Spoiler: I how it will feel nuking a town? Fire up the Pip Boy 3000.

More Info:

Far Cry 2
Once again, I have never played any iteration of Far Cry, PC or otherwise, but it doesn’t matter. FC2 is basically a standalone game, so no background needed. It takes the first person shooter and mixes it with sandbox/open-ended games, such as Grand Theft Auto, and viola! We have ourselves an open-ended game based around shooter controls. I love some of the videos I have seen and the ratings have been…critically acclaimed. Far Cry 2 can also be used as an academic source with 100% accuracy. Watch this person’s video about the fifteen things they learned (Satire).

More Info:

Spore
At one time it was the most anticipated game for me, but those days died when some of the features were removed. I am severely saddened by the fact that there is no online multiplayer component anymore. I hope to see this feature in upcoming releases. I’m not the only person disappointed, it’s one of the most hated games on Amazon solely due to it’s SecuRom implementation. It’s boasting an amazing 2, 500+ negative reviews. Actually the more I read about Spore the more I want to remove it off this list, but I must see for myself.

More Info:

BioShock
BioShock is the spiritual successor of the System Shock series. It’s a FPS/RPG hybrid (this is turning into a trend) and it’s done very well. I have never played System Shock 2, but I imagine it was good. I look forward to walking around with my hand extended

More Info:

StarCraft II
Another one of Blizzard’s lesser cash cows, trumped by Diablo and World of Warcraft. Definitely one of the most critically acclaimed real time strategy games and for good reason. If you’re into RTS, than this is an automatic.

More Info:

Dead Space
The unexpected heat-seeker this year.  It looked like it was going to be good, but no one quite anticipated it would be this good. Check out how many different ways you can meet your untimely demise.

More Info:

Crysis
The epitome of high end gaming. Crysis is has crushed high performance PC after high performance PC. With the top of line equipment (without spending more than $3,000) it will brickwall your framerate. This game was the benchmark check, before Far Cry 2 came out (It’s not as much of a beast, but it is the new darling).

More Info:

Crysis Warhead
Not a sequel, not an expansion, just an alternative. It’s not a beast like Crysis because it has been optimized to meet normal high end systems (lol). This one takes place simultaneously with the other, but allows you to enjoy higher settings.

More Info:

Unreal Tournament 3
A phenomenal game engineered to work well on both high end and mainstream machines. If you like deathmatch FPS games, than this is a must have. Do you have it?

More Info:

Mass Effect
Too be honest, I don’t know much about Mass Effect except the SecuROM incident. From the videos and reviews it looks unique and with Mass Effect 2 coming out, alledgely carrying your characters personality over, it seems to be continuing this trend uniqueness.

Honorable Mentions

Assassin’s Creed
A great game, but not in the league of it’s peers. It’s a scaled down sandbox game when you compare it to the GTA. The fighting system gets repetitive and so do the missions. Still check it out if you can.

More Info:

Age of Empires III + Expansions
The Age of Empires franchise is a personal favorite of mine, but nonetheless, this is worth an honorable mention in it’s own right. StarCraft and AOE are some of the best RTS games available.

More Info:

Gears of War
One of the best cooperative games since Halo, Gears of War differs in one major aspect - Taking cover. Instead of the traditional running and gunning, this time players have to take on wave after wave, pinned down.

More Info:

Left 4 Dead
Much like Dead Space, Left 4 Dead has become an unexpected hit on the scene. Not only can you and your buddies fight off hordes of zombies, but you can switch places and play as those zombies against your friends.
